The American Wheelchair Table Tennis Association (AWTTA) was incorporated in New Jersey as a Not-for Profit Corporation in March, 1986. Prior to its incoproration it operated as a Sports Section within the structure of the National Wheelchair Athletic Association (NWAA). The Sports Section had been in existence since January, 1982. The Corporation received its final 501(c) 3 tax exempt status from the IRS in December, 1988. The AWTTA was recognized as the National Governing Body (NGB) for wheelchair table tennis under the new structure of the NWAA in November, 1987. The NWAA is a group E member of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC).
